How to identify your graphics card

Not knowing what card you have is the most common reason people put off selling it. It takes about thirty seconds to find out, and you do not need to open the case.

The fastest way — Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click the Performance tab. If you only see a small window, click More details first.
  3. Click GPU in the left-hand list.
  4. The full model name is in the top-right corner — for example "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070".

If you see two GPU entries, the machine has integrated graphics as well as a card. The one you can sell is the NVIDIA or AMD Radeon entry, not the Intel UHD one.

DirectX Diagnostic — more detail

  1. Press Windows + R, type dxdiag and press Enter.
  2. Click the Display tab.
  3. Read Name and Display Memory — model and VRAM together.

VRAM matters more than most people realise. Memory capacity has pulled ahead of raw speed in what buyers ask for, so a 16GB card holds value better than an 8GB card of similar speed.

Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. The card is listed by name.

Reading the card itself

If the machine will not boot, the model is usually printed along the edge of the card or on a sticker on the backplate. Photograph the sticker and the whole card — that is normally enough for us to identify it over text.

Still stuck? Call or text (210) 710-2020 with a photo, or bring the whole machine and we will identify it for you, free.

What the model number tells you

NVIDIA and AMD both encode the tier and generation into the number. On an RTX 3070, the "30" is the generation and the "70" is the tier within it — a higher first number usually beats a higher second number, so an RTX 4060 is generally newer and more efficient than an RTX 3070 even though 3070 is the bigger figure.

Suffixes matter too: Ti and SUPER cards sit meaningfully above the plain version, and are worth checking for on the sticker.

Common questions

What if Task Manager shows two different GPUs?

That means integrated graphics plus a discrete card. The Intel UHD or AMD Radeon Graphics entry is built into the processor and cannot be sold separately. The NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon RX entry is the card.

My PC will not turn on. How do I identify the card?

Take a photo of the card in the case, and of any sticker on it. Between the shroud design and the sticker we can usually tell you what it is. Otherwise bring the machine in — identifying it for you is free and takes a minute.

Does the brand on the card change what it is worth?

Less than people expect. The GPU chip drives most of the value; the partner brand and cooler design move the offer a little, mostly through cooling quality and noise.
